Did You Know? Your Business Can Have More Than One Business Credit Score

“What’s my business credit score?” It sounds like a simple question. The honest answer is usually another question: which one?

Did you know your business can have more than one business credit score? Several commercial credit bureaus maintain business credit files, and each may use its own data and its own scoring models. The same business can look different depending on which file, and which score, someone is reading.

Several Bureaus, Several Models

The commercial credit bureaus most often referenced are Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business. Each collects business information independently and offers its own scores, ratings, or risk indicators.

What can differWhy it matters
The data on fileNot every vendor, supplier, or lender reports to every bureau. One file may include accounts another does not.
The scoring modelEach bureau calculates its scores in its own way, and scales are not interchangeable.
What the score measuresSome indicators focus mainly on payment behavior. Others aim to estimate broader risk.
Whether a file existsA business may have an established file with one bureau and little or nothing with another.

There is no single universal business credit score that tells every funding source the same story.

Why the Numbers Can Differ

Owners are sometimes surprised to see a strong result in one place and a thin or weaker one somewhere else. Common reasons include:

  • Different reporting. An account that reports to one bureau simply is not visible in the others.
  • Timing. Updates do not reach every file at the same moment.
  • Matching problems. If the business name, address, or phone varies across records, accounts can be harder to match to the right file.
  • Thin files. A newer business may have too little reported history for some scores to say much.

That is part of why building business credit takes time and deliberate effort, as we covered in why forming an LLC does not automatically build business credit.

So Which Score Matters?

It depends on who is asking. A funding source may review one bureau, several, or none, and may weigh business credit differently depending on the product. For many small-business products, the owner’s personal credit is reviewed as well, as we explained in how business and personal credit differ.

Focusing on a single number can give a misleading sense of where the business stands. Understanding the overall condition of each file is usually more useful.

What You Can Do

Know where files exist

Find out which bureaus hold information on your business and what each one shows.

Check the details

Make sure the name, address, phone, and other identifying information are accurate and consistent.

Know where accounts report

When you open business accounts, understand whether and where they report.

Pay as agreed, and review regularly

Consistent on-time payments build the history every model relies on. Periodic reviews catch errors early.

If business credit cards are part of your plan, how and where they report matters too. We covered that in how business credit cards fit into a larger capital strategy.

Get Pre-Qualified

Business credit is not one score. It is several files, built over time, that together describe how the company handles its obligations. The more complete and accurate each one is, the better the story it tells.
